Inside the human mind, is a vivid depiction of the world around us that is filled with sounds, smells, colors, objects, and memories. But the brain presents us with only snapshots; in fact, most of what we “see” is an illusion. Our eyes aren’t all-seeing but capture fleeting glimpses of the outside world between rapid movements called saccades. During these, we are effectively blind because the brain doesn’t process the information that comes in when they happen. A lot of what our senses are doing is something like data compression: simplifying in order to be able to function. Our minds aren’t passive observers, simply perceiving reality as it is. Our minds actually change reality. “Agnosia” is based on this natural brain function of collecting pictures to construct reality and make memories, employing Ali Phi’s own brain recollections and activities to evoke the question, “Can we perceive reality?”
