Unity of Time and Place

Mahmoud Bakhshi

The title is inspired by Aristotelian unities, dealing with the artist’s responsibility concerning the societal and political consequences of his works. The video-installation was exhibited in 2017 in London, albeit in a different fashion. Here, two videos are shown on two sides of a 3×5 replica of Abadan’s Rex Movie Theater. On one side, an excerpt of the movie “The Deer” is shown. It was probably during this part of the movie that the fire broke out in the theater (it is scene in which the audience are watching a movie). On the other side, a video interview with the film’s director about the incident is played back. During the part in which Bakhshi asks Masoud Kimiai about the victims of the incidents (those who lost their lives) the sound of the video is interrupted by the sound of a clarinet. In the new addition of the work, the artist presents the bronze statue of the seats of the Rex Movie Theater in small displays made of iron and red silk.
