Art Fair

Housed in the former coffee and tobacco factories of the iconic Van Nelle Factory-the building alone is something of a wonder; Le Corbusier once called it “the most beautiful spectacle of the modern age”- Art Rotterdam 2018 was held from February 8 to 11. For its 19th edition, the fair which consist of a large variety of exhibition models offered alternative sections structured by young and renowned curators. Among them, one could recognize Martha Kirszenbaum who was selected to program an over 700 square meters space in the returning “Projections” section. The sixth edition of “Projections” showed international video art of high-quality presented in a very inspiring surrounding, on large, freestanding projection walls, in an open and interactive setting. Mohsen Gallery, invited by the curator, presented Mamali Shafahi with his two-episode video “Nature Morte.” With the help of 3D imagery Shafahi represented themes of birth and creation; transmission from parents to children and, conversely, the transformation of parents by their children; life, passing time and death, to evoke more specific questions that have run through shafahi’s work over the past decade: taboo and the breaking of taboo, private and public identity and gender among other things. This event provided young and emerging film and video artists an important opportunity to gain audience and visibility within the context of the fair.
